AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR CANADIAN MEMBERS

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Never in its 54-year history has The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States addressed its members about ongoing political matters. We need to tell you where we stand. Heated public rhetoric about the tariff barriers and threats to Canada’s economy and boundaries have created fissures that affect us all in profound ways. ACSUS is, and always has been, a non-partisan forum for the promotion of the study of Canada and Canada-US relations. It does not follow, and has never followed, any political agenda or direction. Its biennial conferences and its quarterly scholarly journal, American Review of Canadian Studies, have always been politically ecumenical. ACSUS is a big tent with room for all legitimate, fact-based scholarly opinions. We stand by our mission when it is challenged and when it is characterized as a political act, and in response, we need to declare: we wholeheartedly support a strong Canada and a healthy academic relationship between Canada and the United States. 

More than ever, we are committed to the pursuit of our mission: to promoting teaching and learning about Canada; to facilitating and supporting the study of Canada through a robust grants program, and by hosting forums for scholarly discussion, debate, and publication. ACSUS is indeed based in the United States, but you, our Canada-based members, are a valued and critical part of our mission, not just for the cross-border exchange of ideas but for the viability of the Association. We know the indignation and pain that these political circumstances are causing, and we share that indignation and pain. Some members of the ACSUS leadership are Canadian, and many ACSUS members are Canadians who live and work in the United States. You, alone, can decide what your relationship with ACSUS should and will be. Our hope is that in doing so, you will see ACSUS for what it is and what it represents: a cross-border, collegial, non-partisan space that embodies no political project. If you feel you must step away from ACSUS in these trying times, we get it. Alternatively, we invite you to continue to use ACSUS and its events as a scholarly site for expressing concerns, proposing new plans, and making things better. As scholars, we are much more effective on the ice than on the bench.

LETTRE OUVERTE À NOS MEMBRES CANADIENS

Chers amis et collègues,

En 54 ans d’existence, l’Association d’études canadiennes aux États-Unis (ACSUS) ne s’est jamais adressée à ses membres au sujet des actualités politiques. Aujourd’hui, nous devons vous faire part de notre position. La rhétorique enflammée entourant les barrières tarifaires, ainsi que les menaces pesant sur l’économie et les frontières du Canada, ont créé des divisions profondes qui nous affectent tous.

L’ACSUS est, et a toujours été, un forum non partisan voué à l’étude du Canada et des relations canado-américaines. L’Association n’a jamais suivi ni promu aucun agenda ni orientation politique. Ses conférences biennales et sa revue universitaire trimestrielle, American Review of Canadian Studies, ont toujours accueilli une diversité de perspectives académiques, fondées sur la rigueur et les faits. L’ACSUS est un grand chapiteau où toutes les opinions savantes et légitimes ont leur place. Nous demeurons fidèles à notre mission, même lorsqu’elle est contestée ou perçue comme un acte politique. C’est pourquoi nous affirmons aujourd’hui, sans équivoque : nous soutenons pleinement un Canada fort et une relation académique saine entre le Canada et les États-Unis.

Plus que jamais, nous réaffirmons notre engagement envers notre mission : promouvoir l’enseignement et l’apprentissage sur le Canada, faciliter et soutenir l’étude du Canada à travers un solide programme de subventions et par la création des espaces d’échange, de débat et de publication. Certes, l’ACSUS est basée aux États-Unis, mais vous, nos membres établis au Canada, êtes une composante essentielle de notre mission, non seulement pour enrichir l’échange transfrontalier d’idées, mais aussi pour assurer la viabilité même de l’Association. Nous comprenons l’indignation et la douleur que suscitent les circonstances politiques actuelles, et nous les partageons. Certains membres de la direction de l’ACSUS sont canadiens, et bon nombre de nos membres sont des Canadiens vivant et travaillant aux États-Unis.

Vous seuls pouvez décider de la relation que vous souhaitez entretenir avec l’ACSUS. Nous espérons que, dans votre réflexion, vous percevrez l’ACSUS pour ce qu’elle est et pour ce qu’elle représente : un espace transfrontalier, collégial et non partisan, exempt de tout projet politique. Si vous ressentez le besoin de vous éloigner de l’ACSUS en ces temps difficiles, nous le comprenons. Mais nous vous invitons aussi à continuer d’utiliser l’ACSUS et ses événements comme un lieu d’échange académique pour exprimer vos préoccupations, proposer de nouvelles approches et œuvrer à l’amélioration des choses. En tant que chercheurs, nous avons bien plus d’impact sur la glace que sur le banc.
