Celebrating Canada's Sesquicentennial Journey
24th Biennial Conference of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS)
The Tuscany Suites and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada
October 18-21, 2017
2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation. All over the world those who have Canadian roots or interests will be pausing to reflect on the challenges and achievements the country has experienced over its growth and maturation. As usual, the 24th Biennial conference of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) will welcome papers and panel proposals from graduate students, independent scholars, practicioners, and academics on any aspect of the Canadian experience. But this year we especially encourage papers/panels that take stock of some aspect of the country's development since 1867. In doing so, we join with others around the world in celebrating Canada's sesquicentennial journey.
We also welcome proposals dealing with all aspects of the Canadian experience, including ones in which Canada is compared with other countries. Proposals should be sent to the relevant Section Chair identified in the list below (or to James McHugh, Program Chair, mchugh@uakron.edu). Proposals must be received by May 15, 2017 and confirmations regarding participation should be sent out by mid-to-late June. Paper presenters must be ACSUS members in good standing. The registration fee for ACSUS members is $200 if received before July 15 and $250 after that date. The registration fee for non-members is $320 and that rate will include a two-year membership in ACSUS (to expire December 31st, 2018). All participants must pre-register for the conference by August 30th or else their paper will be dropped from the final conference program. Graduate students can register for the conference at the deeply discounted rate of $50. Requests for refunds of conference registration fees received after September 15, 2017 will not be honored.
The conference will be held at the Tuscany Suites and Casino in Las Vegas (http://www.tuscanylv.com/), an intimate and welcoming resort within easy walking distance of the Strip. On site is a modern, attractive and spacious conference center where all sessions will be held. The resort features three restaurants, a well-equipped exercise facility, a lap pool as well as a regular swimming pool, and a business center. We have negotiated very favorable conference rates (spacious suites for $125 per night; double occupancy Friday and Saturday: $65 per night for other nights), so the Tuscany offers a superb venue for the meeting. The hotel is waiving its usual $24 per night resort fee for conference attendees staying at the hotel, so you will have full access to wireless internet and other resort facilities during your stay. Excursions to the Grand Canyon and to Canada-themed entertainment, such as the world famous Cirque du Soleil will be organized if demand is sufficient. For reservations, please call the hotel directly (Reservations: 877-tuscan1; or 877-887-2261) and be sure to identify yourself as an ACSUS conference participant -#14A2SD - to take advantage of our conference rates. We have a block of rooms reserved for conference participants so register early to ensure that you will get one of these rooms - and all must register before September 18th in order to qualify for the conference rate. See the "Conference Venue" page for full booking information and instructions for booking online.
